De kunst van de buren afgekeken: Bartholomeus Hulsius’ "Emblemata sacra"

  1. Els Stronks

Abstract

This article discusses the emblematical work of Bartholomeus Hulsius (1601–1642) "Emblemata sacra" from 1631 – the first in this kind of Reformed emblematics. The religious influences in his Emblemata sacra come from outside of the Northern Netherlands, in the first place from London. Hulsius wrote his work in Dutch, but he did not achieved as much success, as should be expected. Was it so, because he was too much internationally oriented for his Dutch audience?
